Suggested Activities and Trips from Hatcher Pass B&B
While in the Matanuska Valley there are several day trips that I often recommend to my guests. The Matanuska Valley is near the intersection of two main highways in Alaska – Highway #1, the Glenn Highway, and #3, the Parks Highway.
Travelling by car east/northeast on the Glenn Highway from Hatcher Pass B&B will take you on a designated “Scenic Highway” and through a rugged valley carved out centuries ago by the Matanuska Glacier. Because of the steep hills and mountains, autumn, with the brilliant colors is one of my favorite times to travel this road. But any time of year is sure to provide beautiful sights. Travel along the Glenn Highway and the Matanuska River to approximately Mile 100 and view the largest glacier accessible by road in Alaska, the Matanuska Glacier.
Glacier Park Resort provides up close and personal access to the face of the glacier with guided or un-guided tours on the glacier itself. You can also book a guided hike with all necessary equipment and knowledgeable guides with MICA Guides or Nova River Runners. Or enjoy the countryside from the water on a Matanuska River trip with Nova River Runners. The newest activity for the Matanuska Glacier is the “Nitro” zip line tour with Nova River Runners. Book these activities yourself, or have us do it for you.
After enjoying the Matanuska Glacier enjoy a snack or hamburger at Long Rifle Lodge. The view of the Matanuska Glacier from long Rifle Lodge is stunning. Then travel another 13 miles up the Glenn Highway to mile 113 and enjoy the brilliant colors of the mountains around the Sheet Mountain area. Enjoy a desert or lunch at Sheep Mountain Lodge and then begin a leisurely drive back towards your cabin at Hatcher Pass B&B.
